On Sunday, September 10, at 3:30 PM, the Carolina Theater in downtown Durham will host a season 5 premiere party for the PBS docuseries, “A Chef’s Life.” The show centers around Vivian Howard and her husband Ben Knight as they operate their restaurant, The Chef and the Farmer in Kinston. Each episode highlights a different ingredient as Howard strives to create unique dishes that are rooted in eastern North Carolina. The series has been awarded Peabody and Daytime Emmy awards and last year, Vivian Howard was awarded a James Beard medal for Outstanding Television Personality.
The premiere party will include a screening of the first episode of season 5 followed by a Q & A session with director Cynthia Hill and chef Vivian Howard. Those of you who are regular viewers of the show likely know that chef John May, who worked with Howard at Chef and the Farmer, is now the executive chef at Piedmont in downtown Durham. There were a limited number of VIP tickets that included brunch at Piedmont, but those appear to be sold out already. Hopefully, you are really good friends with someone who snagged some of those tickets. For standard tickets, go here.
To celebrate the fifth season, Howard has collaborated with Sierra Nevada Brewing to create a saison style beer that features cucumber and thyme. The brew will be available at locales around Durham, such as 21C Museum Hotel and the Carolina Theater on the day of and days leading up to the premiere party. Partial proceeds from the sale of the beer will benefit Lomax Incubator Farm in Concord.
