November 21-23 at the Durham Convention Center, 301 W. Morgan St., Durham, NC
Counter Culture Coffee and Wilbur Curtis Co. will host the annual Big Eastern Regional Coffee Competition, the last leg of this year’s US Regional Coffee Competition season. Produced by the Barista Guild of America and the Specialty Coffee Association of America, the event has two divisions: the Barista Competition and the Brewers Cup, both platforms for baristas to exhibit their individual pursuits of excellent coffee.
Open to the public and free to attend, the Big Eastern will host several opportunities for attendees to learn more about the world of specialty coffee and taste coffees from local roasters. For the full three days, the Barista Guild will set up a pop-up cafe that will feature rotating coffees from top roasters including Counter Culture, Octane Coffee, Slingshot Coffee Company, and others.
In the Barista Competition, 46 qualified baristas compete in front of four sensory judges, two technical judges, and one head judge as they present, prepare, and serve four espressos, four cappuccinos, and four signature espresso beverages during a 15-minute race against the clock.
In the Brewers Cup, 32 competitors are judged between two rounds by skilled coffee tasters. The first round is a blind tasting; the competitors all brew the same coffee on their chosen manual devices. Those who advance to the second round will brew and present their chosen coffee to the judges’ panel.
